Super Crochet Mario Kart Blue Shell & POW Block
It was that time of year again for my son to choose what he’d like me to crochet him for his birthday. I limit his requests to twice a year or I’d be crocheting toys for them every week! However, he always picks interesting things for me to create…and ones for which I usually can’t find a pattern.
This year he asked the Spiny Blue Shell with wings (he had to have the wings!) and the POW Block. It took a lot of thinking to make something simple. I corrected myself quite a few times, so I wasn’t able to write out an easy to follow pattern. Perhaps I can post a ‘you get the idea’ pattern? I’ll see what you say. If you ask me for instructions (albeit incomplete) I would be happy to provide them.

Crochet Spiny Shell with wings
The Spiny Shell, also known as Blue Shell, is from the Mario Kart series. For anyone familiar with the game they target the player in first place and inflict a lot of damage.
To create this Spiny Shell I had to break it down to its basic parts. Hexagons to create the blue shell, cones for the spikes, semi circles for the spaces for the arms and head, and tubes for the wings. It took a lot of thought, but I think it turned out rather well…especially for my first time out. The structure is solid thanks to lots of stuffing!
Crochet POW Block
A POW Block is a common in Mario Kart, but packs quite a punch. When thrown to the ground or hit in the air, the POW unleashes a fierce earthquake, causing all enemies on screen to get hurt.
The design for this was pretty simple. The hardest part was getting the letters right. I traced them onto a paper, cut the paper out, and then used that as a template to trace it onto white felt. I carefully cut out the letters and sewed them on with a needle and thread.

Here they are together so you can compare them side by side. I’m happy to say my son was thrilled and instantly began throwing them around and creating a real life Mario Kart. Perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea? Ha! Just kidding. He had a great time and I was happy to see my DIY toys being played with.
