Episode 5: Jodorowsky’s Dune
“Jodorowsky’s Dune” is the greatest movie you’ll never see.
During this episode, you’ll hear directly from Alejandro Jodoworsky, Dan O’Bannon and Frank Herbert. You’ll find links to all of the interviews are at the bottom of the page.
You’ll also find out how we thought of the name for our podcast! Yes, it has something to do with Jodoworsky.
We also counter some of the biggest criticisms of Jodoworsky’s Dune.
• Did Jodo read the Dune (the book)?
• Was he so ambitions that his ideas would never be translated onto film?
• It would have been economically impossible.
• His movie would have been 14 hours long.
• The assertion that “Star Wars” ripped off “Jodoworsky’s Dune”. No, they stole plenty from Frank Herbert’s “Dune”.
Fantastically Terrible Character or Creature
At the end of every episode, we like to highlight a Fantastically Terrible Character or Creature.
In keeping with this week’s show, we pay homage to Frank Herbert’s sandworm, that loveable Godzilla of the desert, that eats armies whole. But there’s more. The sandworm is also the biggest Pablo Escobar in the known universe. Its larvae produces a potent drug called “melange”, which makes ayahuasca look like an ice cream sundae. It’s medicinal and mystical properties create a cartel that controls the spice. If you control the sandworm, you control the spice. And as Herbert ingeniously points out, “He who controls the spice controls the universe”.

Frank Herbert
Let’s not forget who started it all and indulge in the genius that is Frank Herbert with these interviews.
Here’s glimpse into the sage philosophy of Frank Herbert. “The problem with leadership is that leaders are human beings. And when they make mistakes, their mistakes are amplified by the numbers that follow without question. And that’s why I say, ‘Think for yourself. Ask questions.” Both Herbert and Jodoworsky want people to “make your own life”.
