Hmmm. What to do in March? If you happen to be in Spain why not visit Valencia as they celebrate one of the most unique cultural events called, Las Fallas. Booming firecrackers, concerts, light shows, falleras in traditional outfits and Princess Leia-esque buns, brass bands, and churros on nearly every corner. TIP: Go during the week ending March 19. This is when they construct hundreds of giant wooden, cardboard, or papier-mâché sculptures, known as ninots.
On the night of the 19th is La Cremà, where they burn these gorgeous works of art to the ground. It sounds a bit crazy to put so much effort into something that will burn after only a week, but it somehow feels right when you watch it. Perhaps it’s because they literally go out in a blaze of glory. Fallas is visually intoxicating. It’s a unique cultural experience that I would highly recommend to any traveler.
Packing tip: Check the forecast before you arrive. For anyone who hasn’t been to this region of Spain in March, the weather can be cloudy and rainy or warm and sunny. I’ve been there for four years and only once was the weather pleasant enough for jeans and a t-shirt. Every other year I needed a warm jacket. Pack an umbrella or raincoat just in case. A warm scarf and thick socks are also easy to pack…just in case.
